Simple Days at the Faire
Following are screenshots from the Simple Days at the Faire website I created for the Barony of Sternfeld for the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), a pre-17th century historical reenactment group located in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Both the Simple Days and Better War through Archery sites are moved to “private” after the event to prevent confusion when the next year’s event comes around. This is why you are seeing screenshots and not having access to the site itself.
This was the header for the Simple Days at the Faire website, which was set up as a landing page style. As the group’s Webminister at the time, I was working to refresh the entire Sternfeld website, and that included moving pages from our previous WordPress template, Elementor, to a new template. I started the process by setting up this event page as a WordPress page instead of using the template.
Scrolling down the page, I put in a note about the Friday night fireworks that were happening at Hendricks County Fairgrounds.
Along with the fireworks, there were logistics surrounding parking for both the people attending the SCA event and the townsfolk attending the fireworks.
Simple Days is in July, and the Middle Kingdom (the bigger area that includes Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and most of Kentucky) has a rule regarding heat index temperatures and outdoor activities to protect the people attending the event.
Simple Days theme was a parish faire with “a nod to St. Phillip Neri, the patron saint of…shenanigans.” I included the image provided by the event steward to help provide some imagery to break up the text.
The SCA is a nonprofit group and, thus, relies on volunteers to make the magic happen. I set up links for general volunteers as well as for Their Majesties and Her Highness (for more information regarding how the SCA works, visit their website). I also included the quote to help break up text and provide more flow to the page.
The Faire included booths for other groups to show off what they do in their areas. There were booths with different crafts, one that showed examples of medieval apothecary, and another that offered Eastern Mediterranean food samples. There were also people selling items that are useful for SCA reenactors. I included the pictures to help highlight the area.
This is an example of one of the many activities schedule tables I included on the website. I kept the formatting the same for each schedule to maintain consistency and make it easier to find them while scrolling through the sites. We also added anchor tags to the different sections and set up QR codes around the site, so people to go straight to their needed section instead of scrolling through to find it.
Our local group’s Seneschal (similar to group President) got married at Simple Days, so our Feast steward designed a feast around the theme of love (and marriage). This is an image describing the feast’s theme and the first couple of courses for the meal.
These are the last two courses and a sample of the ingredient lists for the different dishes served. Sternfeld is a group dedicated to keeping people with food allergies and sensitivities safe and strives to be as inclusive as possible.
